Jive Monkey Playlist: 10/21/11

I’ve been meaning to post about Simon D (Simon Dominic or Sam D for short) for awhile now.  Half of the rapping duo, Supreme Team, I always found Sam D to be a bit full of it.  However, that’s the front he puts up.  Sam D is kind of like this generation’s DJ DOC.  He’s a talented rapper but doesn’t give two shits about what the critics think.

Or so I thought.  He recently released his solo album a couple weeks ago and prior to that he released a couple of tracks from the album to test the waters.  Apparently, he’s been really nervous about going it alone to the point where he postponed his release a bit.

With Supreme Team, their sound was mostly this fun, immature feel to it but through his solo album it sounds like Simon D has really grown up.

I’m a fan of both “히어로 (Hero)” and “Stay Cool”.  For a change of pace, “Stay Cool” has a breezy, lounge feel to it making it easy for anyone to groove along with a nice glass of wine after work. (Hero)” is more of his classic rapping style but it’s a bit darker in tone.

I suppose the lyrics to this song go along with an interview he gave recently about why he chose Simon Dominic as his stage name.  He got the idea from movie villians, “ In the movie ‘Die Hard 3’ villain (Jeremy Irons), in the movie ‘Demolition Man’ antagonist (Wesley Snipes), both their names were Simon.  I was sick and tired of seeing that kind, heroic image who took down villians and felt villians were more appealing.  I thought I could get rid of that phony, nice image of the best rappers.  Haha.”  That’s the thing about Korea.  They do like their nice, pretty boy images.  And to be honest, I think Sam D has been warming up to haters through his appearance on variety shows.  I still think he’s a punk!  (But I kind of like him that way.)

So this week, I wanted feature “짠해 (Cheerz)”.  Not only does he rap in his Gyeonsangdo accent, but the title is a double entendre. The adjective, 짠하다 (jjan ha da), means to feel sad or bitter and the verb, 짠하자 (jjan ha ja), means let’s toast or cheers which is kind of an onomatopoeia of how drink glasses clink.  The song is basically about drinking your troubles away.  I love how he incorporates French jazz with the hip hop beat and the cinematography of the video is just beautiful even if it is filmed on a set.  So if you’re having a hard day at work or school, forget your problems and party with our resident punk, Sam D!

짠해 (Cheerz)it goes 1,2 난 비틀비틀

Cheerzit goes 1, 2 I’m stumbling, stumbling
3, 4 You’re spinning, spinning
5,6 Life is shriveling, shriveling
7,8 We’re sleazy, sleazy

Don’t collect yourself,
Friend, I know how you’re feeling
Whenever I wake up, I’m anxious
After putting up with it all
Busy running around on the hard days
Listening to you vent,
also feeling cut down a notch
What’s the benefit of his hardship?
Running and running,
your feelings after a stalled marathon?
Hey, hey, let’s say this…
You know in the end there’s no answer,
there, there
Your life, feelings, drink it in one shot
Even if you have something to say,
your tongue doesn’t seem to listen
Today, I’ll take care of you,
there’s tons of cabs outside
Don’t worry about paying,
I have lots of cash today
Don’t be bitter,
Seeing you makes me bitter
When will we see each other again?
Hurry, take a shot
Rather than a dog today,
let’s cosplay as a koala
Rather than a dog today,
let’s cosplay as a koala

One shot, two shots, booze, booze
every time it goes down the hatch
Untangling from those twisted days
Feeling good, my eyes unfocus, oh
One shot, two shots,
slowly as I get drunk
Looking back at this guy’s life
Instead of tears, I drool oh

say cheerz hey cheerz
What else can you say?
One shot, ke eu eu eu

say cheerz hey cheerz
Never an empty glass
Hurry, dararararararara

say cheerz hey cheerz
What else can you say?
One shot, ke eu eu eu

say cheerz hey cheerz
let’s sing loudly
lalalalalalalala

Forget it!
I have to go to work tomorrow
But I’ll listen to you some more,
I’m a gentleman
Answer your mom’s call
since she’ll worry
Today particularly,
your condition is cynical
What’s the reason?
What’s making you down?
As the world’s getting colder,
cool off your sweat
Don’t be depressed,
you never squabbled at the world before
Brave drinking outings.
Here, at your only haven
Hold it in, it’ll fester, dude,
it’s okay to cry
What’s to be ashamed of amongst friends?
It’s okay.
Just let all your troubles go.
The shot before you,
empty it and put it over your head ho!

One shot, two shots, booze, booze
every time it goes down the hatch
Untangling from those twisted days
Feeling good, my eyes unfocus, oh
One shot, two shots,
slowly as I get drunk
Looking back at this guy’s life
Instead of tears, I drool oh

Before you get up, last shot
For this weary world, last shot
For fun, for people we hate,
again last shot
Everyday as we take our last shot,
‘til no end, last shot (2x)

One shot, two shots, booze, booze
every time it goes down the hatch
Untangling from those twisted days
Feeling good, my eyes unfocus, oh
One shot, two shots,
slowly as I get drunk
Looking back at this guy’s life
Instead of tears, I drool oh

say cheerz hey cheerz
What else can you say?
One shot, ke eu eu eu

say cheerz hey cheerz
Never an empty glass
Hurry, dararararararara

say cheerz hey cheerz
What else can you say?
One shot, ke eu eu eu

say cheerz hey cheerz
let’s sing loudly
lalalalalalalala

  1. I love Supreme Team! 🙂 I waited so long for Simon D’s album to be released. I usually prefer the mellower songs, but 짠해 has been on repeat for the past couple days.

As for his attitude, I hope it never changes haha He’s pretty hilarious on variety shows.

On the other hand, I wish E-sens would appear more. He was sick recently; hopefully he’s all better. Also, I hope he releases a solo album too.

By the way, I’ve heard Simon D’s stuff before he debuted for mainstream audience with Supreme Team, and it’s very good. I recommend checking it out. One of my favorite tracks from him is Lonely Night.
