Jive Monkey Playlist: 11/18/11

JYP said that the Wonder Girls wouldn’t return to the retro concept for their 2nd album, Wonder World.  And well… I think “Be My Baby” sounds really retro.   Their outfits and hair in the MV is retro or maybe that’s because the outfits resembles Beyonce in her “Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)” music video.  Eh, Beyonce does nothing for me but I like the Wonder Girls’ look and sound.

To me, “Be My Baby” sounds like a 90’s pop song that you’d find on a Christmas album.  Maybe it the sound effect that resemble bells.  Actually, all the digital sound effects running over the voices throughout the track sounds very 90’s.  Hmm, is the 90’s not old enough to be considered retro?

Or maybe it’s the title of the song that’s tripping me up because when I heard it I immediately thought of “Be My Baby” by the Ronettes and that brought up thoughts of Dirty Dancing.  And nobody puts the Wonder Girls in a corner.

So it seems that JYP is holding a dance contest for “Be My Baby”.  For an opportunity to meet with the Wonder Girls they want you to make a video of yourself dancing to their song and post it on the facebook page.  Here’s the advertisement.  I see some 2PM and 2AM members in this video but honestly nobody tops Jo Kwon (2AM) at the end.  I swear, he belongs in a girl group.  LOL.

“Tell Me” and “Nobody” were big numbers from their 1st album but I can’t say that it made me a huge fan.  Which is pretty odd because “Nobody” took on a do-wop style from the 60’s and any one of my friends will tell you how much I love music from that era.

I think their sound is more dynamic this time around.  While “Be My Baby” is catchy, I also really like their ballad number called “두고두고 (To Leave, To Leave)”.  It’s a duet with Sun Ye and Ye Eun and even JYP praised them saying that they sang it so well that he keeps listening to it on repeat.  JYP wrote and composed the song two years ago.

It’s hard to accurately translate 두고두고 (Doo go doo go).  It means something being left for an extended period of time.  In this song, it’s about how she cannot leave her man despite naysayers.

Wonder Girls – 두고두고 (To Leave, To Leave)

To Leave, To Leave

Though you try to coax me, I don’t hear it
My ears must be filled with tears
Like an idiot though I’m angry
I don’t hate you
My eyes must be filled with love

Though I’m doing this,
saying that I’ll hold on to you
Nothing will change,
it will just end badly
Convincing me it’s over,
my friends try to stop me
My heart just won’t listen
My body just won’t listen

Whatever you do, I can’t let go
Though I’m insane, I can’t let go
If I let you go here, I know I’ll regret it
To leave, to leave, to leave, to leave
To leave, to leave, to leave

Cold words, cold expression, cold actions
Always like you’re dealing with a stranger
An angry tone
Though I see all this, I don’t hate you
In my heart, love is still there

The look of you when I first met you and
You were so good to me with your warm smile
Still warmhearted in my eyes,
what can I do?
My eyes just won’t listen
My ears just won’t listen

Whatever you do, I can’t let go
Though I’m insane, I can’t let go
If I let you go here, I know I’ll regret it
To leave, to leave, to leave, to leave
To leave, to leave, to leave

I can’t let go of this rope
Even if my hands get shred,
completely shred
Although you may
Hurt and continually hurt my heart

Whatever you do, I can’t let go
Though I’m insane, I can’t let go
If I let you go here, I know I’ll regret it
To leave, to leave, to leave, to leave
To leave, to leave, to leave
