Jive Monkey Playlist: 6/1/12

LeeSsang aren’t your average Korean Hip Hop rappers.  There are those musicians that only listen to certain genres of music and it’s reflected in how they compose music.  I find that the best musicians experiment with other genres to create a brand new harmonious fusion.

LeeSsang certainly understands a wide variety of genres and it’s never been more apparent than this album.  With each of its tracks, you’re not really sure if rapping will fit the melody but they certainly make it work.  Just listen to “HOLA (feat. Jung In)”.  There’s a very distinct Cuban jazz vibe to that track.  It just makes me think of having a mojito at a bar by the beach, listening and watching the waves of the beautifully blue, Caribbean waters.

I also really, really like reading their lyrics.  I’ve enjoyed their music for awhile now but I never fully appreciated their lyrical process until I saw Gil working with Bada for the Infinite Challenge’s Annual West Coast Highway Music Festival.  It was particularly touching when Gil took out a letter from his childhood for Bada to read.  Then when they did their version of I am a Singer, Park Myung Soo asked Gil to help him out with the rap for “광대 (Clown)” but of course those deep lyrics were written and rapped by Gary so Gil wasn’t much help.

“Bururi “is the last track on the album and the title comes from the word 불러 (bool luh) or to sing.  Except the type of speech is a bit old-fashioned.  You wouldn’t use it in everyday normal speech unless it’s in a poem or a song.

In some ways, the song reminds me of “광대 (Clown)”, partly because Gary wrote the lyrics.  It’s about smiling through the pain and the harshness of reality.  The song’s a rock ballad and I especially love the repetitive keyboard in the background.  Just like the song says, that constant melody sort of makes me feel dizzy.  Featuring as the female singer on the song, it’s Jung In.  Right now, you can catch her on I am a Singer 2 fighting it out to win the title for “Singer of the Month”.  To be frank, I haven’t been enjoying her performances on that live competitive setting.  Maybe it’s nerves, maybe it’s the songs that she chooses but I would just love it if she could invite LeeSsang to rap along to her singing.  I think Gil’s voice compliments her husky voice well.

(Feeling)

(Feeling)

Bururi (feat. Jung In)

Gil, Jung In)
Bururi Bururi Bururi Bururi
For you Bururi Bururi Bururi
Song (Singing) Sing It (Feeling)

Jung In)
Just for you I’ll sing this song
Whatever you do, it just doesn’t work out
In this world you’re unlucky, you’re
Hoping one day your dreams will come true

Gary)
Money lost in the stock market
Just this morning, the shit I shat
It’s all so futile
My head is just a spinning globe
I’m dizzy, I hunger for existence
Though the water’s already been spilt
My heart aches
What’s left is a pitiful resolve and
a hurt fund, what’s that?
The world if filled with hot air, it’s so crummy

Gil)
Life’s losing a wad of money with a single thought

Gary)
Face reflected in the mirror is whatever
So might as well get some expensive clothes
Spending my whole salary,
my livelihood is always limp
People don’t look in each other’s eyes,
They look at the clothes
They look at the wallet
They look at the car
People always say that those who change that way
Those people are incredibly awful

Gil)
Live confidently with what image you got

Jung In)
It’s better to laugh and forget it all
Like a dancing clown

Just ‘cause I’m laughing
doesn’t mean I’m laughing
But just laugh

Gil, Jung In)
Bururi Bururi Bururi Bururi
For you Bururi Bururi Bururi
Song (Singing) Sing It (Feeling)

Jung In)
Just for you I’ll sing this song
Whatever you do, it just doesn’t work out
In this world you’re unlucky, you’re
Hoping one day your dreams will come true

Gary)
Overwhelming passion,
in contrast, lacking education
Because of it, in the end always disqualified
No matter how much I knock,
the hiring door is locked
Can’t even dream of getting married
Her heart is anxious
I’m busy soothing it
Though I go, go, it’s blocked
As if there’s a giant barrier
Nowhere to go in this mainly educated world
This world is so crummy

Gil)
Though you study for over 10 years,
there’s nothing left

Gary)
Harder for the average person to survive
The earnings of one’s bread shrinks
Moms who watch over their young ones
All day throwing themselves at a staggering world
Only aiming high, the sky is blue
Reality is dark, sanity’s worn thin
No matter how much you’re patient
The world won’t change
This world is crummy

Gil)
No matter what you say,
it’s always an isolated complaint

Jung In)
It’s better to laugh and forget it all
Like a dancing clown
Just ‘cause I’m laughing
doesn’t mean I’m laughing
But just laugh
