Jive Monkey Playlist: 6/22/12

Here’s a look at the not-often-seen American pop scene.  Now it’s officially summer, it’s time for Maroon 5 to heat things up again with their 4th studio album, “Overexposed”.

The album comes out next Tuesday but they’ve already started making waves with their single, “Payphone feat. Wiz Khalifa”.

According to the band, “Overexposed” is supposed to be one of their most diverse and poppiest albums that’ll drive their fans to dance to it.  With the success of “Moves Like Jagger” and the fact that they collaborated with an outside writer, the band tried to again incorporate more outside writers in this album as well.

As mainstream as Maroon 5 is, I can’t help but like them.  Their songs have such a great hook and Adam Levine definitely rocks the sexy, rock-pop vibe.  Truthfully, I don’t really know the other band members beyond Adam Levine.  And it’s not because he’s on The Voice.  I know his tabloid romantic trysts and inflated ego isn’t easy to see without rolling your eyes but I kind of prefer him that way because he’s not boring.  Plus, he couldn’t sing “The way it felt between your thighs, Pleasure that made you cry” without that ‘tude and swagger.

Say what you will about Maroon 5.  Not every song may be a winner but the ones that are have lyrics and melodies that play on repeat in your head.  Such as “She Will Be Loved”.  I tried not to like it because it was so corny but I can still probably sing every word of it.  The music video is also pretty iconic with Kelly Preston sending come hither glances Adam’s way.

Speaking of which, it’s been 10 years since the band debuted with “Harder to Breathe” but they didn’t get recognition until 2 years later when they released “This Love”.  Look how young they were!

Today’s playlist features “Lucky Strike”.  I just love how strong the start is with the electric guitar and then the drums.  It’s obsessively addicting.  Just try not tapping your foot to this funky number and swooning to Levine’s crooning.  The lyrics are suggestive but that’s just how I like my Maroon 5.  It’s gonna be one steamy summer.

Lucky Strike

You’re such a motivator, I gotta get you where
So sick of saying yes sir, yes sir
You’re such an instigator, you wanna play the game
Take it or leave it, that’s her, that’s her

And I can’t wait another minute
I can’t take the look she’s giving
Your body rocking, keep me up all night
One in a million
My lucky strike

Got me so high, and then she dropped me
But she got me, she got me, she got me bad
Took me inside and then she rocked me
She keep me up all night, this is what it sounds like

Oh oh oh my lucky strike
Oh oh oh my lucky strike
Your body rocking, keep me up all night
One in a million, my lucky strike

Stuck in an elevator, she take me to the sky
And I don’t wanna go down, go down
She said I’ll feel you later, go ahead and fantasize
She make me want her right now right now

And I can’t wait another minutes
I can’t take the look she’s giving
Your body rocking, keep me up all night
One in a million
My lucky strike

Got me so high, and then she dropped me
But she got me, she got me, she got me bad
Took me inside and then she rocked me
She keep me up all night, this is what it sounds like

Oh oh oh my lucky strike
Oh oh oh my lucky strike
Your body rocking, keep me up all night
One in a million, my lucky strike

Hey, you’re taking all my pain away
You’re shaking like an earthquake
Hey, you’re taking all my pain away
You’re shaking like an earthquake

Got me so high, and then she dropped me
But she got me, she got me, she got me bad
Took me inside and then she rocked me
She keep me up all night, this is what it sounds like

Oh oh oh my lucky strike
Oh oh oh my lucky strike
Your body rocking, keep me up all night
One in a million, my lucky strike

My lucky strike, my lucky strike
Your body rocking, keep me up all night
One in a million
