Jive Monkey Playlist: 7/27/12

I love Bang Yong Guk’s voice and ever since I first heard his voice in Song Ji Eun’s “미친거니 (Are You Crazy?)” I was eager to hear what his group would sound like.  I have to admit that it took me awhile to like B.A.P’s “Power” and “Warrior” from their first two albums.  The melody was addictive but I found the lyrics to be a bit childish.  Felt I needed to take out action figures and have them fight each other.  It was very apocalyptic battle.  Just kidding.

However, the music is suitable for the image of the group.  They’re young and not your typical boy idol group.  They wanted to create a tougher image as most of the fans of boy groups are females.  Their plan to draw in the males is by doing a mixture of hip-hop, rap and rock music.

B.A.P stands for Best Absolute Perfect and it’s made up up six members.  Bang Yong Guk, Kim Him Chan, Jung Dae Hyun, Yoo Young Jae, Moon Jong Up and Zelo (aka Choi Jun Hong).  Each of the members has a corresponding Matoki cartoon character which is the group’s mascot.  Matoki means “masked bunny” as 토끼 (tokki) is bunny in Korean.

The group seems to have a passion for Hip-hop music and have talked about some of their influences.  B.A.P’s leader Bang Yong Guk has said that while he didn’t originally have a goal of becoming a K-pop singer in the beginning, he saw how Supreme Team and Dynamic Duo had popularized the genre in Korea and wanted to become apart of that.  Ha, I feel so old.  While Seotaiji and the Boys introduced hip-hop and rap by including tracks or elements of that genre in their music, DJ Doc really popularized Korean Hip-Hop in the mainstream.  This is probably what we call a generational difference.

Off of their latest album, I really like the track “No Mercy”.  The song berates ‘lil punks who don’t know any better or are posers.  At Dae Hyun’s suggestion, they rap in a Gyeonsangdo accent.  It adds a nice ghetto element to the track and I tried to incorporate some of that feeling by using American slang in the translation below.   Supreme Team also sometimes uses the Gyeonsangdo accent as both members are from that Southeast region in Korea.

The start of the track has a strong beat that’s reminiscent of Queen’s “We Will Rock You”.  Then Him Chan incorporates a samulnori (사물노리) performance in the middle of the song.  Samulnori is a traditional Korean percussion quartet.  Looks like they even incorporate some of the nong-ack (농악) or farmer’s dance in the choreography (starts at: 2:50).  Just the use of the various percussion instruments and even the whistle adds a energizing quality to the track.

I think their English needs some work though as it’s pretty elementary compared to a YG song and the English sounds a little awkward.  But they’re really young so in time I expect they’ll improve.

B.A.P – NO MERCY

No Mercy

Yeah, sounds good
We fly here B.A.P, leggo

Boom clap! boom boom clap (3x)
Yeah, let it go something like

제대로 느끼게 해줄게
이젠 너희들이 무서워할 말
We’ll be back

음악이 울려 퍼진다,
함성이 크게 터진다

Yo, dudes it’s not like that, not like that
Is doing music a joke?
Stop, it’s not like that for us
Since you’re like that, I’m like this
If you weren’t like that, why would I do this?
Just stop it and enough, get lost guys

Yo, your ‘tude is just not it
Omigod, hyungnim, look at them,

Isn’t chewing out assholes what real men do?
Rapping like a baller,

A paradigm trapped in a stereotype,
I’ll break it, we so fly
I won’t follow like an idiot
Don’t compare me to your parrot-like self

Yo, want me to kick your ass?
let me work out
This is a warning to all you fakes,
we are worldwide

No, no, no, no mercy
Yeah, we are the B.A.P
Baby wussup! Here we are
Now we won’t be so understanding

No, no, no, no mercy

Now, you know? There’s no mercy
If you’re ready to feel it, put ya hands up
Yell louder, get ya hands up

Boom clap! boom boom clap (3x)

Those who know, know, look at us
We are the main
They follow us, they know us well,
Music is a fun game
The level of our style is different,

I’ll make sure you really feel it
The words that’ll make you scared now

  1. I really like B.A.P. They are different from other K-POP groups which is refreshing. I tend to like my groups with a slight edge rather than just pretty boys (although I do love me some pretty boys).I LOVE Bang Yong Guk’s voice and it will just get better with age.
