Jive Monkey Playlist: 10/26/12

Today’s post features songs that are at extremes with each other.  From indie vs. mainstream to Rock Pop vs. Folk Pop, they’re black and white.  But it might be nice to have a little balance because with the dark I like leaving room for a little light.

Epik High has comeback with a new album.  I’m an Epik High newbie but I have been following Tablo’s solo career for a couple of years now.  I was excited to see what this new album would offer.

I’m still trying to like the title track, “UP (Feat. Park Bom of 2NE1),” but for some reason, I’m just not feeling it yet.  Maybe I need to listen to it a couple more times in order to embrace it.

However, I not only love the other title track, “Don’t Hate Me,” but I also love all the other songs on the album as well.  They’re not your typical hip hop trio.  It’s obvious that they understand music very, very well and the fact that they are older I think their use of musical genres from earlier generations sound much more complex.  While listening to the Wonder Girls or even more recently Secret’s “Falling in Love”, they basically take the beat and maybe a familiar hook to play throughout the track to patch together the retro sound.  To me, Epik High’s take on it sounds more authentic and unique.

That’s the way I feel about “악당 (Villain)”.  Sure, it’s a hip hop song but it’s got elements of funk aided by ska band music which gives it a fuller sound.  However, the lyrics make me smile.  Or should I say smirk?  Do you ever want to be contrary just for the sake of being contrary?  There’s a word they use in Korea, ‘You’re like a tree frog (청개구리).’  It’s what parents tell their kids who are misbehaving because they always do the opposite of what they’re supposed to.  I love the mischievous nature of this song and the lyrics makes references to a lot of movie/tv/anime villains they aspire after.  In case the references ot characters don’t come across I noted them in parentheses in the lyric translations below.

Epik High – 악당 (Villain)

I’m the bad guy
All the bad girls say
goodnight to the bad guy

The world is mine
I’m 토니 몬타나
I don’t just spend money
I kill bills

I’m the bad guy
All the bad girls say
goodnight to the bad guy

I’m a mo mo mo mo monster

I’m the bad guy
All the bad girls say
goodnight to the bad guy

DJ play me something funky mang
funk funky mang funk funky mang,
hey
DJ play me something funky mang
funk funky mang funk funky mang,
hey
I cannot be low-key
Call me 타일러 더든
I don’t care
I will spit fire your way
Ole!
I’m your father,
but I’m also one bad mutha
Haters can’t breathe

I’m the bad guy
All the bad girls say
goodnight to the bad guy

Villain

Watching a movie, I’m drawn by the villain
Instead of the hero, I like cockeyed things more
I’m the bad guy
Meeting a girl, I’m only drawn to the bad
More than a saint, I like prickly ones more
All the bad girls say
goodnight to the bad guy

The world is mine
There aren’t enough hands for greed
So what if crazy about ambition?
I’m Tony Montana (Scarface)
Overstating the coming volition
Guilty of using one’s brain
Like a bat’s dream
Wings cut by a cutter
Trapping me in your bias
Handling it with ease
Swallowing both my ears with my voice
Hannibal Lecter (Silence of the Lambs)
A villain seeking out villains
My insides are disgusting,
hmm, making even evil look good, Dexter (Dexter)
I don’t just spend money
I kill bills

Watching a movie, I’m drawn by the villain
Instead of the hero, I like cockeyed things more
I’m the bad guy
Meeting a girl, I’m only drawn to the bad
More than a saint, I like prickly ones more
All the bad girls say
goodnight to the bad guy

Concessions are zero
Greed is the best
If you won’t give me your ear, I’ll just take it
I’m Gordon Gekko (Wall Street)
Could care less about money
I only bloom with chaos
Must be utter confusion
For a ripping smile like The Joker (Batman)
I’m a mo mo mo mo monster
If I’m summoned, Johan (Monster)
The best or the worst
Openly looking at the confusion
Screw manners
The world’s gentle rules
Though I wear a suit and tie, I’m
Vincent or Jules (Pulp Fiction)

Watching a movie, I’m drawn by the villain
Instead of the hero, I like cockeyed things more
I’m the bad guy
Meeting a girl, I’m only drawn to the bad
More than a saint, I like prickly ones more
All the bad girls say
goodnight to the bad guy

I cannot be controlled
You’re just wasting your time
A few kids won’t be a match for me
I’m a mature Magneto (X-Men)
Change your face, it’s damaging
Why do you try so hard?
If you smile, I’ll destroy you
My temper is Castor Troy (Face Off)
Hiding behind windows,
looking at them making noise
It’s so much fun, finding out and
writing down names
Instantly finishing them, Kira (Death Note)
Though I hate them, keeping enemies close
Secretly watching, ready to finish them off
I’m Don Corleone (Godfather)

DJ play me something funky mang
funk funky mang funk funky mang,
hey
DJ play me something funky mang
funk funky mang funk funky mang,
hey
Ah, I like a boisterous stage
Play like a villain
Heroes team up against me but I ain’t chicken
I cannot be low-key
I need to clash and fight
It’s the only way I can feel relieved
The law is my sandbag
It’s nothing really
Call me Tyler Durden (Fight Club)
I don’t care
Whether you’re a child or an adult
I will spit fire your way
Limping and rolling over the beats
Flow is Keyser Soze (The Usual Suspects)
Ole! My body’s dark force is overwhelming
Like Vader (Star Wars), it’s black
I’m your father,
But I’m also one bad mutha
Haters can’t breathe

Watching a movie, I’m drawn by the villain
Instead of the hero, I like cockeyed things more
I’m the bad guy
Meeting a girl, I’m only drawn to the bad
More than a saint, I like prickly ones more
All the bad girls say
goodnight to the bad guy

In an entirely different change of pace, I thought I add some light to the deliciously dark song above.  Here’s a love song by Milk Tea who released this single recently.  It’s part of their dating series of songs.  And super, super, disgustingly sweet.  Can you just imagine a couple being all lovey-dovey here after hearing “악당 (Villain)” above?  Hehe, deal with it.  That’s the contrary mood I’m feeling today.

I featured Milk Tea before and I have consistently liked this duo since their sophomore album.  While their lyrics are simple, I like their choice of words.  There’s a lot of repetition in this song and I’m not just talking about the use of the words “sweet” and “refreshing”.  Sounds like “두근두근 (onomatopoeia of heart thumping – dugeun dugeun),” “속닥속닥(onomatopoeia of whispering – sok dak sok dak),” and “알콩달콩 (living happily ever after – al kong dal kong) are indicative of what falling in love might feel like.  To me, it feels like the singer is hemming and hawing as she trying to sort out her swirling emotions.

Always I’m thinking your smile

Mr. Chocolate and Miss Orange (Acoustic)

Chocolate is sweet, sweet, sweet
Oranges are refreshing, refreshing, refreshing
Chocolate is sweet, sweet, sweet
Oranges are refreshing, refreshing, refreshing

So that I can see you from my room’s window,
Thumping, my heart
Your refreshing laugh, you are
Sweet, sweet, sweet to me

To see me, your black eyes,
Thumping, my heart
Making you laugh, my smile
To me, you are refreshing, refreshing, refreshing

Thumping, you come to me, to me
Whisper, whisper, whisper to me
So I can bottle you in my heart
Sweetly, come closer to me

Happily ever after, play with me, me
So my laugh doesn’t part
This happiness feels like it’ll last forever
You feel the same way as me
Always I’m thinking your smile

Your name-filled paper
My trembling heart
Wrote without thinking, you are
Sweet, sweet, sweet to me

Flecked on me, me, like a rainbow
Every day, you are new to me
You are just going to show it to just me, right?
I’ve come looking for you, sweet lady

Quietly, I lean on your, your shoulders
Fast asleep, you pat my shoulders
This happiness feels like it’ll last forever
You feel the same way as me

Moment I first saw you, this fluttering feeling
Hmm, what to do? What am I to do?
But then you said you liked me
Don’t think I’ll ever forget that day, Ah ha

Chocolate is sweet, sweet, sweet
Oranges are refreshing, refreshing, refreshing
You are sweet, sweet, sweet to me
I am refreshing, refreshing, refreshing to you

Love is sweet, sweet, sweet
