Jive Monkey Playlist: 11/16/12

Lee Ha Yi or now known as Lee Hi is the last of the K-Pop Star graduates to debut.  That is, if you don’t count her featuring on Epik High’s “춥다 (It’s Cold)”.  Her new single is called “1, 2, 3, 4 (원, 투, 쓰리, 포) (1, 2, 3, 4 (One, Two, Three, Four)” or should I say won, tu, sseuri, po.

She’s with YG and Yang Hyun Suk personally produced this single.  It’s what they’re marketing as “retro soul”.  Yeah, I guess that works for me.  What doesn’t really work is the switch to spelling her name as Lee Hi in English but that’s probably just me nitpicking at all the minute details of how she and this track are being marketed.

Yang Hyun Suk shelled out double the amount of money to make her music video compared to any other debut artist.  And it definitely shows.  The video is hip and colorful… and has that retro pop look which suits the song.  Her movements are a little awkward in the video but I think that’s because she more known for her vocals than for anything else and hasn’t had as much time to prepare the dance part.

If you actually watch her live or on a music program, the awkwardness melts away.  Perhaps it’s because she feeds off that live energy rather than one on one with the camera.  I don’t worry about her though.  She’ll catch up in no time.

The song has been consistently in the top 10 since it came out and mostly as number one.  However, it has also been attracting older audiences.  They say the track is evocative of Duffy’s “Mercy” and her attitude is similar to Amy Winehouse’s “Rehab”.  Other than the fact that “Rehab” is this 60’s soul pop number, I can’t quite see it.  Rather, the comparison is quite flimsy.  I mean, can you imagine Lee Hi saying, “What kind of fuckery is this?”  Yeah, I didn’t think so.

However, I can completely abide by the Duffy comparison and I was immediately hit with that similarity the first time I heard the song.  If you want to compare attitudes, I think Adele’s “Rumour Has It” comes to mind.  Not their voices, but there is the way that Adele sings that number that reminds me of this song.  It’s got that same soulful voice but distant tone.  “1, 2, 3, 4” is a song that’s about pushing the guy away.

Unfortunately I think the song’s lyrics are a bit repetitive and simplistic but I’m okay with it considering her age and experience.  Plus, she’s not the only one of the K-Pop Star graduates whose lyrics are simple.  Her voice is so charismatic that I end up not paying too closely to the lyrics and instead enjoying the catchiness of the track.

Hey
C’mon now
I said 1 2 3

I’m sick and tired
I think I’m going going crazy ooh
I think I’m going going crazy ooh

no no Nananananana
다 잊어줘 영원히 no no

Listen

I said 1 and 2 and 3 4 ooh
1 and 2 and 3 4 ooh
game over game over ooh
game over

I’m sick and tired
I think I’m going going crazy ooh
I think I’m going going crazy ooh

no no Nananananana
다 잊어줘 영원히 no no

Listen

I said 1 and 2 and 3 4 ooh
1 and 2 and 3 4 ooh
game over game over ooh
game over

Hey baby

I said 1 and 2 and 3 4 ooh
1 and 2 and 3 4 ooh
game over game over ooh
game over

1 and 2 and 3 4
1 and 2 and 3 4
1 and 2 and 3 4

game over
game over
game over

1, 2, 3, 4 (One, Two, Three, Four)

Hey
C’mon now
I said 1 2 3

Saying that I’m still yours
Stop flattering yourself
That person in the past is not me
The sound of the coming morning
Flowers which have bloomed that much
As usual you’re not with it, why?

I’m sick and tired of your hypocrisy
A poor liar ooh, will you now get lost?
I think I’m going going crazy ooh
I think I’m going going crazy ooh

Stop being miserable
Disappear far away
no no Nananananana
Don’t cry pathetically
Forget everything, forever, no no

Listen
Don’t worry about others
and just take care of yourself
I don’t need your sympathy, uh

I said 1 and 2 and 3 4 ooh
Time will fix everything
1 and 2 and 3 4 ooh
game over game over ooh
game over

No matter where a girl like me goes
Though you look carefully,
it’s a rare phenomenon
Sometimes sexy, sometimes innocent
Men just cry and leave, childishly

I’m sick and tired of your hypocrisy
A poor liar ooh, will you now get lost?
I think I’m going going crazy ooh
I think I’m going going crazy ooh

Stop being miserable
Disappear far away
no no Nananananana
Don’t cry pathetically
Forget everything, forever, no no

Listen
Don’t worry about others
and just take care of yourself
I don’t need your sympathy, uh

I said 1 and 2 and 3 4 ooh
Time will fix everything
1 and 2 and 3 4 ooh
game over game over ooh
game over

It hurts so much
Must have forgotten already
Hey baby, leave

I said 1 and 2 and 3 4 ooh
Time will fix everything
1 and 2 and 3 4 ooh
game over game over ooh
game over

1 and 2 and 3 4
1 and 2 and 3 4
1 and 2 and 3 4

game over
game over
game over

  1. I must say Lee Hayi (or Lee Hi which I will probably never understand lol) has had the best debut of the Kpop Star contestants so far. Baek Ah Yeon was my favorite, but her debut was so mediocre I tend to forget she released anything. Park Ji Min was overshadowed by her partner, and the song was cute, but nothing really stood out. On the other hand, Lee Hi’s song is catchy and fits her quite well. Her lives are much better than the M/V. The M/v which is very pretty, but Lee Hi is so awkward in it. I love her voice though, and I hope her future releases are quality.

    • I agree. Both Baek Ah Yeon and Park Ji Min released ballad numbers close to each other and it wasn’t much of a standout ballad either. But Lee Ha Yi did a more upbeat number with a catchy retro sound. You know, I would have preferred Baek Ah Yeon’s title track to have been Love, Love , Love instead.
