Lately Running Man has just been okay. Sure, I still laugh but what I loved about the show was that the comedy, suspense and awesome list of guests all came hand in hand. Maybe it’s just me but I think I expected too much from the Choi Min Soo episode and felt underwhelmed when I actually saw it. It’s not Choi Min Soo’s fault. He was pretty brilliant when you think about the thought he put into staging everything. But I think that’s just it. There was too much staging and planning which left little room for adlibbing. But upon hearing who the guests were for this week I got super excited again. This week and next week’s guests feature Lee Seung Gi and Park Shin Hye.
I was definitely more excited about Lee Seung Gi guesting than Park Shin Hye though. Sorry Park Shin Hye!! I love that you’re super cute. But I miss seeing Lee Seung Gi on variety shows. The last time he worked with this production cast and staff was back when he did X-Men. It’s been 6 years since he last saw them because of that other little variety show he was on, the competition known as 1 Night 2 Days.
The show has this whole James Bond theme. (Wow, Skyfall just premiered and they’re already on that.) Our favorite FD, Dong Wan, plays M and gives the group their missions.
First mission (which is actually not given by M but on a card) is to gather the agents. It’s basically a game of tag starting with Yoo Jae Suk in which he needs to recruit everyone together by putting an “R” sticker on them. He first grabs Lee Kwang Soo and the two begin their chase for the other members.
A woman by passes Kim Jong Kook which arouse his suspicions but it’s Yoo Jae Suk who tags the girl he thinks is Song Ji Hyo until Park Shin Hye reveals her face.
I have to say that Lee Seung Gi put a lot of work in order to stay hidden. Changing coats and even donning a helmet and carrying a box to make it appear like he’s a delivery guy. I thought they would never find him until Lee Kwang Soo turned around. Was it a cameraman that clued him in?
Then Haha leaps in at the last minute to tag him with a sticker.
After the mission the cast splits up into teams. Yoo Jae Suk, Lee Seung Gi and Lee Kwang Soo are teamed together and the former two reminisce about the past leaving Lee Kwang Soo as the odd man out.
They all head to their next mission which takes place at a car wash. The team must use the water guns in the car in order to knock down some soda cans before time runs out.
The catch is that they will be randomly hosed down.
And the raincoats do very little to help them.
Next, the third mission of the day takes the members to a swimming pool. They have to recite the sentence on the card with perfect pronunciation before time runs out. If they mess up, they’ll be catapulted out of the flying chair and into the water. At first, I didn’t know what flying chair was but hell, the expressions they made as they were flying through the air was sooo worth it.
Ha, I love that Seung Gi got his hair styled that day to look all pretty on camera only to be doused in water all day long. And on a cold fall day too.
The fourth mission had the members trying to slip their entire body through the frame of either a tennis racket, fishing net and a wire hanger. As you can probably tell, it was definitely a trial and error challenge.
Gary even flashes his underwear to Ji Hyo by accident which she promptly complains about. He responds with, ‘It’s your favorite color, right?’
The final mission was the name tag game. Instead of trying to rip it off to eliminate a member, they had to find a working water gun among the thousands and spray the opponent’s name tag.
I’m surprised as to how far Ji Suk Jin made it but I think he was just lucky.
And it seems that Lee Seung Gi never forgot what he had learned from 1 Night 2 Days. Still part huh-dang (Seriously, how hard is it to figure out which door is pull and which door is push and try to open some cabinets?) and still part brain.
The two guests return next week to continue their James Bond missions.
While this episode wasn’t the greatest, I really appreciated the creative thought the production staff put into the games. Rigging a car to blow smoke or readying the flying chairs. It’s that kind of ingenuity that makes me like the show no matter who is guesting. I just hope they keep that level of excitement up.
