Jive Monkey Playlist: 7/12/13

Lee Seung Chul has been in the music business for about 28 years.  And he’s still making music.  I had originally planned on featuring a song from his recent album and then looking through my files to feature something from way back when.  Unfortunately, I don’t really have any of his old stuff.  I guess I just assumed I did.  I even looked at all my old cassette tapes.  Yes, cassettes.  I feel old.  Let’s not even bring 8-tracks into the conversation.

Anyhoo, his latest album (his 11th) came about a couple of weeks ago.  I know 11th doesn’t really sound like a lot when his career spans over 28 years but he doesn’t churn them out like a factory.  Even back then, I remember him taking his time with his releases and he’d go and perform several songs on various music programs before heading back to the studio to make another.

As for this album, I’ve really been liking a lot of the songs on it.  I remember him for his ballads.  He had upbeat songs but I mostly laughed them off.  I love the upbeat title song on this album though.  Although I’m not going to feature “My Love” here, which is also the name of the album, I love the music video.  Super cute.  Lee Seung Chul helps a 30 year-old guy propose to his girlfriend; they met in college.  So they set up hidden cameras at a restaurant.

It all starts off innocently when the girlfriend arrives with some friends but then a couple at the next table over starts fighting.  The girl is left in tears when suddenly, the music starts playing, people start dancing.  The girlfriend realizes that she’s the only one who has no clue what’s going on.

Since they only shoot the music video (and do the proposal) in one take, all of the crew, dancers, musicians and singers had to practice for days in order to get the timing just perfect.  12 hours of video rehearsals, 31 cameras, 50 actors, 40 members of the orchestra and 7 members in Lee Seung Chul’s band.  Worth checking out below.

My Love

The entire album is very varied in its sound.  A little bit of jazz, a little bit rock, a little bit ballad pop, a little bit of dance pop.  I like the varied, energetic vibe of it.  In that same vein, I like the upbeat song, “Run Way”.  (Not sure why there’s a space as it should be “Runway” like walking the runway.  *Shrug*)

The song uses a lot of onomatopoeia words that give the song a very rhythmical beat.  I thought I’d use the opportunity to explain them now as the English translation onomatopoeias or some equivalent of it.  점점 (juhm juhm) gets repeated a lot in the song and it means gradually or little by little.  뚝뚝 (ddook ddook) is the sound of drops of water/liquid falling, like the sound of a leaky faucet.  펑펑 (phung phung) is a loud noise and usually is limited to describing heartbeats.  축축 (chook chook) isn’t really an onomatopoeia but it’s used to describe drooping or a dampening feeling.  툭툭 (took took) is the sound of tapping, whether you’re tapping someone’s shoulder or taking steps.  That’s all for today’s Korean lesson!

Lee Seung Chul – Run Way

Run Way

Run Way

One Love One Life
Run Way
Run Way

One Love One Life
Run Way
Run Way

One Love One Life
Run Way
Run Way

Run Way

Always falling down, get up
and again falling down kind of kid
Tears drop drop, Heart beats beats
It was like that then

Really nothing has changed
Similar to back then, day by day
To hang in there and still hanging on
Now my appearance, full of cuts and bruises

Walking over there, it’s you, whom I love
Want to grab you, try to grab you,
You’re one step to fast

One Love One Life
You’re gradually fading, gradually
Want to hold on to you
Run, Run Way,
My heart gradually is gonna explode, gradually
Don’t stop and just go
Run Way

Don’t know how much I’ve gone
Don’t know where I’m supposed to go
My shoulders go droop, droop
My steps go tap tap, it’s continuously hard

Walking over there, it’s you, whom I love
Want to grab you, try to grab you,
You’re one step to fast

One Love One Life
You’re gradually fading, gradually
Want to hold on to you
Run, Run Way,
My heart gradually is gonna explode, gradually
Don’t stop and just go
Run Way

One Love One Life
You’re gradually fading, gradually
Want to hold on to you
Run, Run Way,
My heart gradually is gonna explode, gradually
Don’t stop and just go, again like now
My heart gradually is gonna explode, gradually
Don’t stop and just go
Run Way
