Jive Monkey Playlist: 3/31/14

It’s been ages since I listened to the indie modern rock band, Zitten. They were still a duo when I last heard them. Since then Singer Sung Yong Wook took over the reins and they’ve been pretty much been laying low for two years. That is until I heard the song “고래 (Whale)” on the drama Full Sun. The song is so addictive that when he recently came out with his album, “diaspora: 흩어진 사람들 (diaspora: Dispersed People)”, I was curious to download it.

I have to admit that the title of the first song I picked to feature is so in tune with the weather lately. Is it supposed to be Spring or have we regressed back into Winter? I’m not so sure. Surprisingly, although the song is called “안개 (Fog)”, it’s not a depressing song. In fact, there’s an uplifting quality to it. While there is something mysterious about the so-called “fog”, there’s also a comforting quality that envelops you. And so the fog has this positive and romantic connotation about starting over from the beginning.

Zitten – 안개 (Fog)

Fog

A night where everything appears misty
Hidden in the dark, we came out on the road
Following the road up on the ridge
As we continued up, the fog grew deeper

Lingering in our hearts, the smell of grass and
Drawing us in the dark, one’s moon
Everything’s perfect and ready for us
It’s a good day to run away

To where? Across and beyond
With who? Us two
Past the fog
Far past the village

Where no one asks us a question
It’s a good day to run away to the beginning

When we go in the thick fog
Should I tell you what I liked best?
My eyes shined searching for you
My hands existing to hold you

To where? Across and beyond
With who? Us two
Past the fog
Far past the village

Where no one asks us a question
Run away to the beginning with me

A night where everything appears misty
Hidden in the dark, we came out on the road
Following the road up on the ridge
As we continued up, the fog grew deeper

Let’s leave for the beginning
Go to the beginning with me
It’s a good day to run away to the beginning

On the other hand, “해바라기 (Sunflower)”, has the opposite connotation. Upon seeing the title, you expect it to also be an uplifting song but this rock ballad has a sadder storyline. Whether you’re leaving or deciding to leave, there’s a sense of sadness about ending a chapter of your life. They always say that there’s a light at the end of the tunnel but first you must get past the hurdles that immediately face you. The song and lyrics are quite beautiful even if they are bittersweet.

Zitten – 해바라기 (Sunflower)

Sunflower

Before I knew it the skies go from a mournful dark to shining
Jumping around playing, the young friends
One by one return home

The wind strolls the reeds at the park
Where can I tuck my head
So that my body can avoid it

I know
In your garden, the flowers there
Can’t be cut
Now can’t embrace your feelings
Leave you in the shadows

The heavens will just remain with the heavens
The clouds will drift somewhere
Where am I supposed to look? I still don’t know
The fading sunflower

Even if I change several times a day for you
You can’t stay for one minute
This peace

I know
On your bookshelf, whatever the phrase
There are no traces left
Now I don’t have the heart to ask
Leaving me behind in corner

The heavens will just remain with the heavens
The clouds will drift somewhere
Where am I supposed to look? I still don’t know
The fading sunflower
