Jive Monkey Playlist: 7/21/14

Sometimes you just need a little help from your friends. When you’re a solo voice, sometimes that single voice can’t do the song justice. There are a number of collaboration tracks that I’m grooving to lately and because these artist often frequent as featured artists, I’ve gotten to know their voice and work enough to follow their solo work as well.

Kim Hyun Joong recently released another mini album. Before the release of the album, he release the single “HIS HABIT” featuring rapper Kanto and Kim Ye Rim (aka Lim Kim). I heard Kanto featured on a number of tracks so although I haven’t really heard his solo work, I’m looking forward to checking it out one day. On the other hand, I’m very familiar with Two Months’ Kim Ye Rim. What I really like about her voice is that although she’s a singer, she can kind of rap in that melodic way as evidenced by her voice here.

“HIS HABIT” is a pretty interesting song with its funky disco beat. The beat almost reminds me of Marvin Gaye’s “Got to Give It Up”. In tempo, “Got to Give It Up” feels a bit slower but it’s got the same cowbell beat going on throughout the track.  The lyrics are also interesting in that it’s about a couple fighting but the song doesn’t feel angry. She thinks he’s cheating on her and has had enough. He may have had a bad habit of this bad behavior but he alleges that it’s a thing of the past. He wants her to believe in him again. Kim Hyun Joong and Kim Ye Rim seem have to this great chemistry as they go back and forth with their arguments. I guess Kanto adds a different flavor with his rap but the more captivating aspect of the song are the main two voices.

My Little Bad Habit
You Know I Got a Habit

My Little Bad Habit
You Know I Got a Habit
My Baby Girl

My Little Bad Habit
You Know I Got a Habit
My Baby Girl

My Little Bad Habit
You Know I Got a Habit
My Baby Girl

My Little Bad Habit
You Know I Got a Habit
My Baby Girl

Habit

Habit

난 배우 but 절대
You Know That

Hey Baby Girl

Where shall I start?
I said it’s not me
Said the same thing several times, repeatedly
Listen to what I’m saying

Fallen as much as we can fallen, our relationship
Really the last time I’m promising myself
Every day I’m the patient one
Every day, you’re free to have love relations

Like a habit, you look at other women
Like a habit, you play separately with them
Just friends is the excuse that you use
Yeah, this is how time keeps passing by

My Little Bad Habit
You Know I Got a Habit
My Baby Girl

My Little Bad Habit
You Know I Got a Habit
My Baby Girl

I just know from the look in your eyes
I can feel it
Thought it was us
Until now, Oh

Thought I knew you but didn’t know that side of you
If I died and awoke again, you wouldn’t know it
One by one, if I tell everything then what’s the use?
Wherever we go, I’ll be the one to lose it all

Like a habit, you look at other women
Like a habit, you play separately with them
Just friends is the excuse that you use
Yeah, this is how time keeps passing by

My Little Bad Habit
You Know I Got a Habit
My Baby Girl

My Little Bad Habit
You Know I Got a Habit
My Baby Girl

Oh those words
I don’t understand it
Something you can’t fix, your Habit

Oh just stop it
From now on
What I’m left with, your Habit

You don’t even listen to me
You don’t even try to listen
Don’t stab me with your sharp intuition
This time, I really didn’t do it, want
Just you, when you see me
I’m an actor but I absolutely
Was at home exactly that night
Said I was sleeping, You Know That

Today, I woke up late because I was working
That work was not picking up ladies, it was music
What? This hair?
It’s my older sister’s
Saying again that there’s glitter on my face
Something we can’t ever resolve
It’s always the same pattern
Try to resolve it
But nothing changed
Waited several times
Hey Baby Girl
Now stop, I’ll say it again
There’s no one else but you

My Little Bad Habit
You Know I Got a Habit
My Baby Girl

My Little Bad Habit
You Know I Got a Habit
My Baby Girl

You Know I Got a Habit

Taeyang’s “눈, 코, 입 (Eyes, Nose, Lips)” came out a few weeks ago and I never featured it on this playlist post. It wasn’t a song that immediately grabbed me and I actually prefer “새벽한시 (1AM)” instead. However, I noticed that YG has released different cover versions of that song by different YG artists. They’re all unique and different and reflect the style of that artist.

As for the original, Taeyang’s version is sad as he expresses feeling sorry about the way the relationship has turned out. The physical reminders of her bring him pain because of his regrets.

Ackdong Musician’s version of the song does feel sad, too. However, there’s an immaturity reflected in their age that makes the song somewhat an ill fit for them. However, I did like the duet aspect of their version.  Even Eric Nam has done his own cover of the song as well.

However, my favorite version belongs to Tablo. Yes, this song is Tablo’s cover but technically it is a collaboration since Taeyang’s voice is also heard on the track. Tablo wrote the rap lyrics in English but rather than expressing sadness, there’s an anger simmering below the surface. Lately, whenever I see Tablo, I see him as Haru’s dad. But lyrics like this remind me why I love Tablo’s writing so much.

The physical reminders to him also bring him pain but in an entirely different way than Taeyang’s because he wants to move on from a toxic relationship. It’s funny how two people could be talking about the same thing but it has an entirely different meaning.

타블로(Tablo) – 눈,코,입 (Eyes, Nose, Lips)

(Eyes, Nose, Lips)

you left me paralyzed, no cure, no rehab for me
funny that you got the nerve to keep asking me
how I’ve been
you’re the victor in this pageantry
but the only trophy you deserve, catastrophe
I’d rather we be dead to each other
no eulogies said for each other
no “rest in peace’s”
the memories got my chest in pieces
I’m praying that your eyes are the first to go
the way they looked when you smiled
the way they opened and closed
and your nose, every single breath against my neck
and then your lips, every empty promise made and said
please fade, fade to black
please fade, fade to black
but the nightmares come back
because your eyes, nose, lips
every look and every breath
every kiss still got me dying
uh, still got me crying
because your eyes, nose, lips
every look and every breath
every kiss still got me dying
uh, still got me crying
forget a promenade, let’s juggernaut,
down memory lane, leave no thought alive
to the slaughter house, I’m taking my pain
time to sever my brain from my heart and soul
my knees are burning hot, but God is cold
I’ve been told, one day you’ll know
too much of heaven’s a sin
after the show, it’s only hell that it brings
so take it slow and let time heal everything
they say that time flies, but you keep breaking its wings
you’ll never fade, fade to black
please fade, fade to black
but the nightmares come back
because your eyes, nose, lips
every look and every breath
every kiss still got me dying
uh, still got me crying
because your eyes, nose, lips
every look and every breath
every kiss still got me dying
uh, still got me crying
you wish me well
you wish me well
I wish you hell
I never want to look into your eyes again
no, I never want to hear you breathe again
let me go, let me go
baby, tell me this is the end
because your eyes, nose, lips
every look and every breath
every kiss still got me dying
uh, still got me crying
the tears drive me out of my mind
because your eyes, nose, lips
every look and every breath
your kiss still got me dying
uh, still got me crying
crying, crying
fade out

Finally, there’s Verbal Jint’s new single track, “반도의흔한랩퍼 (Just Another Ordinary Rapper)”. I love his music because he’s a great producer who also understands various genres of music and doesn’t constrict his music to a single type. He has also done a lot of collaborations over the years and through him I got to know San E and Swings.

There always seems to be that same signature Verbal Jint rhythm that runs through his tracks. I feel the same way about Eminem. Not only are their voices unique but I can recognize their tracks by listening to the rhythm. There’s a signature rhythmical sound in the way they rap that helps me to recognize that it’s them like it’s a fingerprint.

Technically, the title literally translates as Peninsula’s (meaning Hanbando or Korean Peninsula) Commonplace Rapper. I don’t know why but I find it strange to call a Korean rapper commonplace but maybe it’s because I grew up with American rap. The title reflects that he’s just a rapper and not a spotlight seeker. Just a regular guy who wants to work and pick up chicks. Sounds rather commonplace.

What’s not so commonplace is his talent as a rapper. As a rapper, there is an arrogant confidence that you have to project. Certainly, San E comes off being arrogant with his songs but I think that’s just part of the rap culture. However the song takes a different perspective on that and I find it interesting that Verbal Jint is not about living up to those preconceived notions of what a rapper should look like.

ha yeah that’s me
Yeah that’s me that’s how I be yeah
before and after
Yeah that’s me that’s how I be yeah
before and after

turn up 하는 건 still
DrDre then I feel like I’m a gang
do I want expensive watch
fuck yeah I love it
but don’t get it twisted dawg
Yeah that’s me that’s how I be yeah
before and after

내가 싫으면 fuck you고
I know them girls love me
so I say thank you boo
black and yellow

Who is stronger? Who is faster?
Have different interests
Who has the most money in their account?
I am really a bit different
Who is better at getting lady’s numbers?
Have different interests
VJ, on my way to buy side dishes
Coincidentally with a bleary-eyed stare
Walking along as if I’m jobless
Saw me an eyewitness
Said they were a big fan
Wanted to get a signature on their phone case
Since I looked disheveled
That feeling of theirs just disappeared
ha yeah that’s me
People might not understand but
I was covered in rain
Or else I would have looked better
Again I’m pretty enough
Behind these lyrics, the man
Doesn’t ever match the image
I’ll accept my lot
That’s a type of betrayal
I’m sorry but
The shows that I’ve come out on
Feels like a waste of time
Don’t do live shows
Don’t have time to care about my appearance
Rather spend that time gulping drinks
And hole up somewhere working
Seems like a better thing to do
Whether it’s working on picking up women
Or working on music, I don’t know
Yeah that’s me that’s how I be yeah
Even if I’m on TV, there aren’t any drastic changes
before and after
Just another ordinary rapper
Can’t pretend that I’m a celebrity
There’s something that’s awkward
Yeah that’s me that’s how I be yeah
Even if I’m on TV, there aren’t any drastic changes
before and after
Just another ordinary rapper
Even if I go on being nice
If something’s not right
I’ll spurt poison into my music

San E, now I must have earned a lot of money
That’s what everyone must think
But there hasn’t been much that’s changed
Still at my rehearsal room ‘til dawn
In front of the Isu Station mirror
What’s the point of driving? Subway and bus still
Dongdaemun shopping, cheap and convenient still
Before my concert
turn up, still
DrDre then I feel like I’m a gang
Not trying to cosplay as an ordinary or poor person
It’s just that that’s me
do I want expensive watch
fuck yeah I love it
But ingrained tightly in my body
The habit is the criminal
A person can’t just turn around and change
Someday I might change, too
But I keep thinking of it
Praying for me and
Diligently wake up early
Doing hard work, my dad and mom
That’s why volunteering is my swag
A sinner that’s trying to live virtuously
but don’t get it twisted dawg
Don’t know when I’ll come back
To that crazy person in my past
Don’t know, forget it
Whatever happens, the thing I want to say is
Even if you ask a hundred times, it’s the same
I’m just an ordinary rapper
Thanks for listening
Yeah that’s me that’s how I be yeah
Even if I’m on TV, there aren’t any drastic changes
before and after
Just another ordinary rapper
Can’t pretend that I’m a celebrity

This is my life that I talk about in my music
That’s why I’m content
