Jive Monkey Playlist: 11/3/14

Say what you will about Taylor Swift. There are some who think she’s overrated but I actually really think she’s a talented young musician. I have to thank Kanye for introducing me to her as if it weren’t for his infamous outburst I would have not been curious about her music. There aren’t that many pop stars her age who writes songs about themselves with such poignancy.

I’ve been loving listening to “Shake It Off” but I was curious to see what the rest of her latest album, “1989,” would sound like. I’ll admit that I’m not a big fan of “Welcome to New York” but rather I like the songs about her relationship and refreshing honesty in them.

“Blank Space” is about the start of a new love but instead of being all lovey-dovey, which is something people probably expected from the over saturated, sweet image of Taylor Swift, the lyrics are incredibly down-to-earth. She’s very aware that starting a new relationship can be great but it also could be messy. With the future in mind, she expresses how relationships can be a rollercoaster ride but she’s still wide-eyed and openhearted to give love a chance.  Although for some reason, and I don’t know if it’s because I’m writing this post so early in the morning, I keep hearing “Starbucks lovers” in the chorus instead of “a long list of lovers”.

Blank Space

Nice to meet you
Where you been?
I could show you incredible things
Magic, madness, heaven, sin
Saw you there and I thought oh my god
Look at that face, you look like my next mistake
Love’s a game, wanna play
New money, suit and tie
I can read you like a magazine
Ain’t it funny rumors fly
And I know you heard about me
So hey, let’s be friends
I’m dying to see how this one ends
Grab your passport and my hand
I could make the bad guys good for a weekend

So it’s gonna be forever
Or it’s gonna go down in flames
You can tell me when it’s over
If the high was worth the pain
Got a long list of ex-lovers
They’ll tell you I’m insane
Cause you know I love the players
And you love the game

Cause we’re young and we’re reckless
We’ll take this way too far
It’ll leave you breathless
Or with a nasty scar
Got a long list of ex-lovers
They’ll tell you I’m insane
But I got a blank space baby
And I’ll write your name

Cherry lips
Crystal skies
I could show you incredible things
Stolen kisses, pretty lies
You’re the king baby I’m your queen
Find out what you want
Be that girl for a month
But the worst is yet to come
Oh no
Screaming, crying, perfect storms
I could make all the tables turn
Rose garden filled with thorns
Keep you second guessing like oh my god
Who is she? I get drunk on jealousy
But you’ll come back each time you leave
Cause darling I’m a nightmare dressed like a daydream

So it’s gonna be forever
Or it’s gonna go down in flames
You can tell me when it’s over
If the high was worth the pain
Got a long list of ex-lovers
They’ll tell you I’m insane
Cause you know I love the players
And you love the game

Cause we’re young and we’re reckless
We’ll take this way too far, it’ll leave you breathless
Or with a nasty scar
Got a long list of ex-lovers
They’ll tell you I’m insane
But I got a blank space baby
And I’ll write your name

Boys only want love if it’s torture
Don’t say I didn’t say I didn’t warn you
Boys only want love if it’s torture
Don’t say I didn’t say I didn’t warn you

So it’s gonna be forever
Or it’s gonna go down in flames
You can tell me when it’s over
If the high was worth the pain
Got a long list of ex-lovers
They’ll tell you I’m insane
Cause you know I love the players
And you love the game

Cause we’re young and we’re reckless
We’ll take this way too far, it’ll leave you breathless
Or with a nasty scar
Got a long list of ex-lovers
They’ll tell you I’m insane
But I got a blank space baby
And I’ll write your name

After the relationship is over, there’s the heartbreak. After you hit rock bottom, only then can you begin getting up and starting your life over again. I love the metaphor of both water and becoming sober in “Clean” as it washes away the sins of the broken relationship. My favorite lines are, “10 months sober, I must admit, Just because you’re clean don’t mean you miss it, 10 months older I won’t give in, Now that I’m clean I’m never gonna risk it.” Just because you recover from a relationship, it never really leaves and you can fall into a bad pattern of falling in the same trap again. However, the will to not repeat those patterns is what keeps you “clean”.

Clean

The drought was the very worst
When the flowers that we’d grown together died of thirst
It was months, and months of back and forth
You’re still all over me like I wine-stained dress I can’t wear anymore
On my head, as I lost the war, and the sky turn black like a perfect storm

Rain came pouring down when I was drowning
That’s when I could finally breathe
And that morning, gone was any trace of you, I think I am finally clean

There was nothing left to do
And the butterflies turned to dust they covered my whole room
So I punched a hole in the roof
Let the flood carry away all my pictures of you
The water filled my lungs, I screamed so loud but no one heard a thing

Rain came pouring down when I was drowning
That’s when I could finally breathe
And that morning, gone was any trace of you, I think I am finally clean
I think I am finally clean
Said, I think I am finally clean

10 months sober, I must admit
Just because you’re clean don’t mean you miss it
10 months older I won’t give in
Now that I’m clean I’m never gonna risk it
The drought was the very worst
When the flowers that we’d grown together died of thirst

Rain came pouring down when I was drowning
That’s when I could finally breathe
And that morning, gone was any trace of you, I think I am finally clean
Rain came pouring down when I was drowning
That’s when I could finally breathe
And that morning, gone was any trace of you, I think I am finally clean
