Big Bang is back! After being busy with their own projects for almost 3 years now, they’ve reunited with a group release.
The title of the full-length album is called “MADE” but the group is planning on releasing the songs little by little as digital singles. Each month, the group will release at least a single song with the title of the album reflecting one of the letters of “MADE” so the first letter they’ve released is “M” with two songs, “BAE BAE” and “LOSER”.
I have to admit that I didn’t like “BAE BAE” when I first heard it. I think it’s more of a visual song and deserves to be listened along with the music video. Only then, can you fully grasp the hilarity of the visual sexual innuendos seen in the video. From orchids to squirting needles to bikini-clad mermaids, it packs a bigger punch than if you were to just hear it.
The ending as well is pretty random with the mention of rice cakes*. It does go along with the sex thing as rice cakes are usually chewy and glutinous and it’s supposed to reflect perfect chemistry when it all comes together. Don’t get me wrong; it’s definitely a weird video. However, that’s what I love about the boys as they have no qualms about making fun of themselves.

“LOSER” is definitely more of my cup of tea. Musically, anyways. However, it was a beautiful Spring day and in a good mood when I went to work and sat down to watch this music video. This music video suddenly made me feel so sad. It’s a very angsty song about youth and finding your place in this world.
The music video is quite dark as it depicts the nasty side of pride and wrath in various forms. Then, you get to see the pathetic side of each character as well.
For me, it was Daesung’s scene that stick out the most visually. He’s so good at wearing his pain right on his sleeve instead of suppressing like most of the other guys.
As for T.O.P, his scenes are incredibly hard to watch because of the misogynistic nature of it. My first reaction to seeing him wandering the streets was laughter because of his acting but it’s quite an uneasy scene when you see it as a whole. He does depict the pathetic loser that’s mentioned in the lyrics but I have to admit that I’m less sympathetic towards T.O.P as opposed to the others. I guess that’s the strength in his acting here.

Musings of a Chunkeemonkeeato 
My reactions to both were pretty much the same as yours. Loser is more to my liking as a song, but I can appreciate the hilarity of Bae Bae when I watch it along with the video. I do hope that the next songs they’re going to release are a bit more explosive or upbeat because that’s what I want most from them.
And yes, TOP’s part in “Loser” was pretty hard to watch, but I can understand that it was kinda the point. But Daesung’s part made me really sad. He really did a good job with the acting in the video and his character arc was the most heartbreaking to watch.
In terms of acting, TOP’s crying scene was pretty good as well, but since I had such negative feelings about his character I couldn’t quite understand it on an emotional level. But I can see how it can be more intriguing because K-pop videos usually depict the members in a positive manner and I like that Big Bang took a risk with that. In fact, they could’ve gone all the way and given each member a really dark and twisted character arc, that would have been fascinating to watch.

I don’t know if I’m suddenly finding myself outgrowing Big Bang. In fact, most of the songs I’ve been loving lately are indie songs or anything tied to old school K-Pop like Jinusean. I like the two songs but I loved their last album which makes me feel a bit meh about this one, I guess? I can see and appreciate where they’re going with their music which made me want to write about it in today’s post but I guess it was a half-hearted post. I really like Loser but there’s nothing worse than being in such a happy mood only for it to be ruined by something so trivial. I got depressed for no reason. Lol. If you’re happy and you know it, listen to a different song.

I’m not outgrowing Big Bang per se, but I see that their music is starting to develop towards a different style than what I enjoy. It’s not that they’re suddenly not good, it’s just that I see that the members have grown out of the music they used to do (which is normal because our own musical tastes change over time as well) and are now experimenting more and trying to find a new sound for themselves. It’s normal for an artist to do that, but I’m not sure if I’m interested in that new style.
But perhaps it’s too early to tell. After all, they are going to release songs until August?September? Maybe the next songs will make me change my mind about what I just said.

I think there is evolving in terms of sound and music. How is Big Bang music before this and the music older fans loved? Perhaps someone can enlighten me on this. Loser is similar to Bad Boy.

I’m not a music expert so I’m not sure I’d be able to describe it very well. You’re right in that Loser is a bit similar to Bad Boy and perhaps that’s the reason why I was drawn to that song, with the exception of the fact that Bad Boy has a really catchy hook and lyrics. (Sorry, I know the lyrics are Korean but it was really easy to learn without having to look at the lyrics themselves.) I think there was more of a group cohesiveness with their sound? Like if you listen to Bae Bae, I can almost hear 5 different songs reflecting each of the member’s styles in their solo music. It’s cool but perhaps that’s why the melody just isn’t sinking in right away.
