Jive Monkey Playlist: 5/25/15

Happy Memorial Day if you’re in the States!  I’ve written this post ahead of time so I can experience… what is that called?  Oh yeah, fresh air.  Today, I’m featuring artists Horan and Zion.T.  They are two artists that I love but have very different styles of music from each other.  Still, there are two songs that I’ve been listening to lately that weirdly have common themes.

What is the value of someone’s worth?  How important is it to be noticed and appreciated by the people around them?  When I first heard “꺼내 먹어요 (Take It Out and Eat It),” it reminded me of Kim Bum Soo’s “집밥 (Homecooked Meal),” which I wholeheartedly love.  Both songs are about food on the surface level but Kim Bum Soo’s  “집밥 (Homecooked Meal)” is about feeling lonely from being homesick while Zion.T’s “꺼내 먹어요 (Take It Out and Eat It)” is more about feeling lonely in general.

The song reminds me of the daily grind of adult life.  You get up in the mornings, you go to work, you come home to your own place and do it all over again the next day.  Sure, you’ve got friends, you’ve got freedom but there’s something about young adulthood that makes you feel like you are missing an entire part to yourself.

That loneliness is hard to describe but I think Zion. T’s music video captures it beautifully.  While the lyrics of the song is sung in prose, it doesn’t sound very cohesive.  It seems like it’s meant to come across as thoughts that would go through one’s head.  Zion. T is a figure in the girl’s life that she’s completely oblivious to.  Sure, he could come in the form of lover but I think this song’s theme is bigger than relationship issues.  It’s about life and adulthood and how empty it could make you feel.  The girl temporarily fills that emptiness with food but I think the important message here is that you recognize the signs and hopefully learn to move past it.

Zion.T –

Take It Out and Eat It

Hello
It’s not easy, right? Busy, right?
Why does it have to be this way, I wonder
There’s a lot of things you hope for
(That’s right)
You want to rest
It’s noisy
It’s all annoying, right?
You want to go home, right?
(Even though you’re home)
You must want to go home

When it’s like that, this song
Like chocolate
Take it out and eat it
Even though you’re tired, some breakfast, lunch
Make sure you eat it
Then later
I’ll compliment you

Miss you
I like you a lot
Want to hug you more
Love, love, let’s do something like that
Might just really love you

When you’re hungry, this song
Like a morning apple
Take it out and eat it
Even though you’re tired, some breakfast, lunch
Make sure you eat it
If you do, later at night
You will sleep well

It’s tiring
Because you’re beautiful, shit
Please notice me
Don’t let me slide by
Love me, me, me
Don’t let me go

Best-known for collaborating with the Clazziquai Project, Horan is the indie female singer with the delicately, beautiful and sentimental voice.  I’m actually enjoying her latest solo album titled “괜찮은 여자 (A Decent Woman)” and the song that I’ve been loving is “연예인 (Celebrity)”.  With a title like that, I was expecting the song to be a lot more poppy and upbeat.  Instead, it’s a calm, thoughtful reflection on what it means to be a celebrity.

Despite the lights and glamour, being famous can be quite lonely.  You’re forced to constantly be smiling and brush off harsh comments like it’s nothing.  When you’re an entertainer and promoting an album or movie, you get the same cycle of questions and I could understand that one would crave a real conversation to feel like a person again.  And yet, Horan doesn’t come off as if she’s bitter about it all.  In fact, she’s thankful but fully recognizes that dichotomy of the entertainment world versus the real world.  Her voice comes across as pragmatic and yet beautiful as she comes to accept this truth.

Celebrity

I have nothing to say
Don’t even know how to bring up difficult things
Made up, I look ridiculous
Just looking awkward

Please talk to me
I’m listening to you quietly
Don’t know how to make an irritating sound
Just wait for me

It’s okay to hate me, I won’t know anyhow
If you just like it
I’ll always wear the same smile
Like I don’t know pain
If you look at me just once, that’s enough
With that, I’m

Don’t worry, whether you look at me or not
Whether you’re beautiful or not, I won’t hate you

It’s not hard
Like you want, all you have to do is want me

I’ll always wear the same smile
Like I don’t know pain
If you look at me just once, that’s enough
With that

I’ll always wear the same smile
Like I don’t know pain
If you look at me just once, that’s enough
With that, I’m

Am I’m dazzling?
Is it just like a happy fairy tale?
Do you see your dreams in me?
Yeah, thank you
