Jive Monkey Playlist: 7/13/15

Lately, I’ve been watching some music programs.  One of which is the rap competition, Show Me the Money 4.  Though he didn’t make it past the 2nd round, P-Type is a well-respected rap artist/producer.  This week’s playlist features a single he released that describes his experience on the contest variety show.

Personally, I didn’t really know who P-Type was.  Judging by the expressions on the faces of the judges and the contestants, he appears to be quite the legend in the underground hip hop scene and has produced many tracks for the top rap and hip hop artists in the industry.  Even though he was competing against them, many of the contestants felt honored to be competing with him.

P-Type breezed through Round 1 garnering applause from the crowd in the auditorium.  As for Round 2, the judges were happily grooving along to P-Type’s smooth rhymes when he messes up.  As the smiles faded and flustered over his mistake, he flubbed his rhymes again.

One by one, each of judging teams pressed the fail button hoping that the other teams would send him through.  They just happened to press the fail button all at the same time, eliminating the legend from the competition.  Unfortunately, that’s just how the competition works; it’s 50% skill, 50% luck.

The single, “Birdman,” talks about the embarrassment he felt as he received an all-fail.  He compares himself to the Michael Keaton’s Riggan Thomson from the Oscar-winning film Birdman.  Not knowing who he was before the show, I wonder why he made the decision to compete in the first place.  Perhaps he wanted to test himself among the up and comers or he wanted to experience it in order to keep his own music fresh.

Whatever the reason is, I respect him for doing the show as he had nothing to prove except to himself.  In addition, it’s very different competing in front of cameras than performing in the intimate settings of underground clubs and even festivals.  Still, I hope he not discouraged and comes back to redeem himself for Season 5.

Birdman

Just what, how did it happen?
The sight of me falling while holding on to my dignity
Even though it was handed to me
Couldn’t take leverage over it
Just got crushed, should have just released my music
Put too much at stake
Trembled at the thought I’d lose all that I bet
Even though days passed, feel dirty
Others are more shocked than me
Again don’t know if they hope I’ll crumble some more?
The one that ruined me is always me
I was embarrassed, you were shocked
Well, being surprised, for you and I, it was the same
As soon as I finished gambling
Realized it, doesn’t suit me
There’s no El Dorado for everyone
But even if I knew, would have gone

Happy and sad in that movie,
ahjussi birdman
That it would be me,
plunging birdman
Rather than the ground, lower,
at the bottom birdman
That’s me, birdman,
I am the birdman
Through streets of windy undergarments,
a running birdman
That it would be me,
plunging birdman
Rather than the ground, lower,
at the bottom birdman
That’s me, birdman,
I am the birdman

It’s okay to sell my face and so on
But why are you checking out the rat hole? Tell me
But I’m changing who I am
But are you really okay? Tell me
A test I had taken for the first time with rap
Interestingly ruined my dick too
Didn’t take it easy either
Why did I plummet on my own?
When the summer passes will it be alright?

Been a few months since I released my album
Already been forgotten
It was really alright
To just plop and sit down
It’s unfortunate of my DNA
Danger of fucking up,
become used to it after everything has passed
The threat or the chance will come again
It’s okay to sell my face and so on
The threat or the chance will come again
But I’m not going to change who I am

But are you really okay? Tell me
Are you okay? Tell me

Happy and sad in that movie,
ahjussi birdman
That it would be me,
plunging birdman
Rather than the ground, lower,
at the bottom birdman
That’s me, birdman,
I am the birdman
Through streets of windy undergarments,
a running birdman
That it would be me,
plunging birdman
Rather than the ground, lower,
at the bottom birdman
That’s me, birdman,
I am the birdman

But are you really okay? Tell me
Are you okay? Tell me
