Jive Monkey Playlist: 11/23/15

I’ve been listening to these two artists since I was a teenager. Their talent as musicians is probably what kept them relevant all these years and they continue to do so with their latest album releases.

Although Shin Seung Hoon is probably known for his ballad tracks, and while I do enjoy those tracks, I also like it when he ventures into other styles. For example, it’s not played much when people first think of Shin Seung Hoon but I quite enjoy the track, “내 방식대로의 사랑 (Love In My Way)”. I personally prefer the mambo version over the house version.

The reason why I like these tracks is that for a great legend like Shin Seung Hoon, it seems like a good ballad seems obvious. Plus, there are a number of great hits to choose from that it would be hard to just settle on one. Hence, “마요 (Don’t)” just seems to be a track that sticks out to me. At first, the title confused me as it translates as “don’t” or more accurately adds a negative connotation to a verb. It seems like the opposite of what you’d think a sweet, R&B track should sound.

However, it seems to reflect the guy’s point of view to the girl he likes telling her not to give up on him. It’s adorable that the girl here is playing hard to get but what’s more endearing is that instead of being impatient, he relays that she’s worth the wait and believes that she’ll find a gem if she gives him a chance. The track features Beenzino, who wrote the rap portion of the track, and he adds just the right touch of sweetness without being pushy.

Understand
Here I stand

Hey baby you don’t know me
But I’m waiting for you

Hey baby you don’t know me
But I’m waiting for you

I understand

Understand
Here I stand

Hey baby you don’t know me
But I’m waiting for you

Hey baby you don’t know me
But I’m waiting for you

Understand

Here I stand

Hey baby you don’t know me
You’re my Life (You’re my Life)
But I’m waiting for you
You’re my dream (You’re my dream)

Hey baby you don’t know me
You know
But I’m waiting for you
I love you

Don’t (feat. Beenzino)

You’re a difficult person
You don’t push or pull
Do you want me or not
I don’t understand what you want
You said you like it with your eyes
But you say no with your lips
Don’t do it, don’t say it
If you gonna be this way, just smile quietly

Now I think I might understand
Your love
Isn’t always easy, I understand it well so
This is why if you keep just looking at me
Step by step
You’ll want to get to know me more

Understand
What’s the rush, it’s nice right now
Like Friday more than the weekend
Here I stand
Not going anywhere, like a shadow
Even if it means waiting, if it’s you
I’m happy

Hey baby you don’t know me
But I’m waiting for you
Don’t smile
It’s that I want to hug you

Hey baby you don’t know me
But I’m waiting for you
Don’t look for me, your love
Because I’ll be that person

I understand
When I see you
It’s not that you don’t like me
When it surely seems like you’re gonna come
You don’t show up again
You’re a bit ambiguous
What are you so slow
Felt like there was like a dot, dot, dot
At the end of your texts
I won’t really ask why
When you get to know me more and more
At least then
Hope you’d use an exclamation mark

I know, you’ve learned just from heartbreaks
From the start, you must have felt dread
I will erase those loves
Step by step, slowly draw nearer

Understand
What’s the rush, it’s nice right now
Like Friday more than the weekend
Here I stand
Not going anywhere, like a shadow
Even if it means waiting, if it’s you
I’m happy

Hey baby you don’t know me
But I’m waiting for you
Don’t smile, it’s that I want to hug you

Hey baby you don’t know me
But I’m waiting for you
Don’t look for me, your love
Because I’ll be that person

Understand
I’ll wait for you, don’t rush
I’ll open up the path to me

Here I stand
Walking that road to come to me
I have faith, that’s why
I can wait for you

Hey baby you don’t know me
You’re my Life (You’re my Life)
But I’m waiting for you
You’re my dream (You’re my dream)
That’s why I can wait for you

Hey baby you don’t know me
You know
But I’m waiting for you
I love you

I’ll open up the path to me

Kim Jo Han was part of the group Solid before going solo. Back in the 90’s, I loved Solid because there were very few groups who could incorporate English that made sense in their lyrics. Trust me, Korea has come a looong way in this department, so even if I see misspelt words or bad grammar, I just smile and think of how cringeworthy it used to be. The thing that made Solid different was not only did they write their own music but all 3 members grew up in the LA area. Kim Jo Han was the only out of the 3 that was actually born Stateside. I don’t know why it was such a big deal to me back then but perhaps it was because I appreciated listening to lyrics that actually made sense.

These days, he still in the business as a solo artist and I was particularly taken with this track, “여왕과 함께 춤을 (A Dance With a Queen),” for the catchy hook. I could imagine him singing this to his wife. As much as they’ve settled into the married life with kids, he doesn’t seem to want to forget the romance. While Shin Seung Hoon’s song seems to be about a new love and a young romance, if the couple reflected in that song stayed together for 10 more years, they could be the couple that’s reflected in this track.

My love

Oh love

A Dance With a Queen

Don’t know when
Now, even if there’s really no words
We know each other well

With one look
Even if you go out of your way to express it
You say what you want

You must be sad
Because the love has become familiar

My love

As far as today, between us
Let’s pretend it’s the first time we met
Like we know nothing about each other
Like our hearts are fluttering

Like a character in a movie, reach out my hand
With the right foot, left foot above the rhythm
Like there’s two kids
Like today’s the first time

Where do you live
Until you’ve reached your destination,
I’ll be by your side
A person like me
Has always kept you in my thoughts

You must be sad
Now that there’s only words left

Oh love

As far as today, between us
Let’s pretend it’s the first time we met
Like we know nothing about each other
Like our hearts are fluttering

Like a character in a movie, reach out my hand
With the right foot, left foot above the rhythm
Like there’s two kids
Like today’s the first time

You must be sad
Now that there’s only words left

My love

As far as today, between us
Let’s pretend it’s the first time we met
Like we know nothing about each other
Like our hearts are fluttering

With the right foot, left foot above the rhythm
Like there’s two kids
Like today’s the first time
