Today of all days, I’m retreating to my happy place. I’ve been in this mental state of denial and pardon me if I just want to stay there for a little bit longer. So I’m finding some comfort in listening to some mellow, happy tracks about L.O.V.E.
Soran is an indie pop band that’s been around for a while now. The band consists of four members: Lead Singer Go Young Bae, Bassist Seo Myun Ho, Drummer Pyun Yoo Il and Guitarist Lee Tae Wook. They recently released their latest full studio album this past Fall, which I recommend, but the song I’m featuring today is from a single that was released last week.
When I was in college, I would often retreat to the basement level of my school’s library where there were desks where you could study. However, the high walls of the desks and the dry textbook material did a better job at lulling me to sleep more than anything else. If I just had some “inspiration” in the form of classmate crush, I’m sure I’d get… no studying done whatsoever. And yet, I’m sure I’d be excellent at studying my crush and passing that final with flying colors.
That is exactly the subject matter of Soran’s “너를 공부해 (I Study You)”. The song’s arrangement was produced by Philtre and if you loved his remake of “소녀 (Girl)” from the Answer Me 1988 OST, you can still hear why he is such a hot commodity in the music world. I can’t help squeeing at the dulcet tones of Go Young Bae’s voice and the cutesiness of the song’s lyrics. If you attended school with them, how would you be able to resist this charming confession?

The other sweet and mellow track for today’s playlist is a remake collaboration from the hip hop artist, 40, and Sistar’s Dasom. “그대와 나, 설레임 (You and I, A Flutter of Excitement)” is originally a song by Acoustic Collabo. I featured the original song a few years ago, which I still love, but there is something about this collaboration that felt refreshingly updated. Originally, an acoustic number, I love that it has been modernized with a jazzy feel and their gentle, genteel voices ooze chemistry. I feel we need more of this gentility in the world today.
