The boys are back causing mischief and chaos in the West and they’ve got two more members to join in the fun. New Journey to the West made its debut last week on Navercast with a preview into the new season and more specifically the new members that will be joining them, WINNER’s Song Mino and Super Junior’s Kyuhyun. Clearly, the two new members worried about joining the show because this type of variety show was new for them. They might be good at games but they have no idea how to be underhanded and sneaky.
When I first heard the news that Ahn Jae Hyun would be on New Journey to the West 2 to fill in for Lee Seung Gi who is in the army, I wasn’t sure how I would feel about it. However, the episode that aired this past week had me laughing so hard that I couldn’t breathe that it’s totally worth sharing. (Also, later the new season of Show Me the Money.)
I have to admit that I’m not all up on the Web-TV format as I’m more of a traditionalist when it comes to TV. I supposed that’s going to change big time with more and more shows choosing to distribute via the internet and, what we in the industry call, over-the-top service (OTT). However, I couldn’t resist not watching New Journey to the West. In some ways, the show doesn’t feel like a TV show at least when you consider how it’s edited. Rather, it’s a bunch of web shorts chronicling the group’s trip to China. In other ways, there are elements that are classic Na PD such as beautiful aerials of the city they’re visiting and games. Of course, you can’t leave out the most important part, the camaraderie between the cast members.

Brought to us by Lee Myung Han PD, Yoo Hak Chan PD and Writer Lee Woo Jung (1 Night 2 Days, The Romantic, Answer Me 1997), they bring Lee Su Geun, Eun Ji Won and Kim Jong Min back together from the first season of 1 Night 2 Days. Touted as a 100% real-time variety program, the show is done absolutely live with these three guys with no script. As for what it’s about? I’m still trying to figure that out. It’s partly a talk show if they invite guests on, it’s partly a variety show where they play games like they did on 1 Night 2 Days, it’s partly them acting silly in a live format setting.
And what do they do with my love? They obviously don’t live a quiet middle-aged life. Even after the travesty of Comeback Show Top 10, I forgave them. So what if they wanted a little spotlight? It was a nice where are they now. The singing was another thing. Lee Sung Wook had a nice life with a wife and kids and his own BBQ restaurant. Sung Dae Hyun still seemed to be in the entertainment world. And Park Chul Woo had his own bar and thankfully besides making an appearance, he declined to get back together. I don’t blame him. He was pretty old when he was originally in the group to begin with.
