Just Bananas About: Week of 7/3/17

Music is such a powerful medium.  And so, when I saw that Yoo Hee Yeol was doing another music program on JTBC, it made me wonder if this was meant to be the program that followed Sugar Man which ended last year.  Despite not having Yoo Jae Suk beside him, the fact that Yoon Do Hyun and Lee Sora would be joining intrigued me in and of itself.  Begin Again takes its name from the music film starring Kiera Knightley, Mark Ruffalo and Adam Levine but takes these established musicians to the streets in foreign countries where they’ll have to sing in front of audiences that may not be familiar with who they are.

It didn’t seem out of character to me that Yoo Hee Yeol and Yoon Do Hyun would agree to do the program but it was highly surprising that Lee Sora agreed to do it.  After all, she’s been pretty much of a recluse for the last 6 years and hasn’t released anything new since then.

Having said that, the three musicians, with their differing styles, got together to practice and go on this adventure.  Noh Hong Chul will act as their road manager and I’d imagine that he will also provide amusing commentary.  The first destination for the group is Dublin, Ireland.  Immediately, the group can’t help but think of Once as Glen Hansard’s character in the film was that of a struggling musician, busking in the streets.

Just Bananas About: Week of 6/5/17

I’m always amused when I see shows about celebrities and their everyday lives.  Are they what I imagine them to be when they’re not performing?  Most recently, Actor Joo Sang Wook hosted Our Ugly Duckling which was filmed before his marriage to Actress Cha Ye Ryun.

It was interesting to see how Joo Sang Wook relayed that his own mother is very tough like Kim Gun Mo’s mom.  He’s the middle child with an older and younger sister and he admitted that he wasn’t very good at school like his sisters were.  He says that although he gave his mom grief when he was younger, he now is good at giving his mom plenty of allowance now which garnered a lot of laughter from the moms.

Just Bananas About: Week of 5/8/17

Despite my hopes for good weather this weekend, I pretty much kept things low-key and homebound for Cinco de Mayo.  It is also Family Month in Korea and due to family-related holidays this weekend (Children’s Day on May 5th and Parents’ Day on May 8th) that many shows got preempted.  And so, it only seemed fitting to feature the latest episode of Superman Returns and the precocious kids on it.

Just Bananas About: Week of 5/1/17

With the start of May, it’s also the start of family month in Korea.  With holidays such as Children’s Day (5/5) and Parent’s Day (5/8), May seems to be that time of year when families spend more quality time together.  However on Ugly Duckling, that may not be the case for these man-children.  Yoo Hee Yeol joins Shin Dong Yup and Seo Jang Hoon as the guest MC on the most recent episode.

Just Bananas About: Week of 4/24/17

I didn’t watch last season’s Produce 101, partly because I didn’t have the time and partly because I wasn’t all that interested in watching a show in which young women are set up against each other to become “the number one idol”.  I know I’m being hypocritical as just because this season features young men doesn’t make the competition format any better.  However, I’m going to try and be a bit more open as many of the contestants are out trying to achieve their dreams.  That’s something I can totally root for.

Just Bananas About: Week of 4/17/17

One of the latest variety shows to make it past pilot season is Cheeky Cohabitation – Vacancy.  There’s gotta be a better way to translate that title but that’s the English translation.  It features a bunch of different celebrities that end up living together as roommates.  What’s most interesting about the show are the different pairings.
