Just Bananas About: Week of 6/13/16

I don’t watch a lot of comedy shows.  I watch a lot of variety shows that are funny which are different from the comedy variety shows.  It’s just that these shows can sometimes be a hit or miss for me if the skit isn’t funny.  SNL Korea is the one comedy show that I keep up with and frankly, I don’t think it has been having a very good season.  However, I was looking forward to the appearance of the AOMG crew and was delighted to see this episode was the funniest episode I’ve seen all season.

This week I’m featuring artist known for being sexually explicit.  Some may be uncomfortable with the fact that these artists are venturing in the 19+ territory but they are adults.  I don’t think I’m a prude about the subject matter but there are aspects of these tracks that I want to critique.  Typically, I use this column to feature tracks that I like and though I do like these songs to a certain extent I hope to use this space to also discuss varying points of view.  Beyond what is considered “art” and being open-minded enough to discuss adult subject matter, I think listeners can take in the message they’re depicting and critique it objectively.

Just Bananas About: Week of 9/18/15

Last Saturday night, my sister and I attended the Show Me the Money concert here in NY.  We had been watching the show together.  While we didn’t know what happened on previous seasons, it seemed like this season had a lot of controversies which probably made things more dramatic for television.  Still, the stage is their element and I was truly bummed that I had to miss out on the Epik High concert as I was away that weekend for vacation.  This concert was to makeup for missing out on that Epik High concert and I get to see some of my other favorite artists.

It took me some time before I actually listened to Gain’s latest mini album, “Hawwah”. Her last album was underwhelming because I know that she could be sexy but after awhile that can’t be the only concept you’re selling. Certainly, Gain is sexy on this album but I like that she’s exploring other genres and having a lot of fun with it.

It starts with the bop of the head, maybe the tapping of the feet and suddenly you want to head the club and just dance it out. This week’s playlist are songs that make me want to get on my feet and party. It’s a total coincidence that both artists used to be part of the same group back in the day.

I feel like I’ve already said spring is here in one of my recent playlist posts.  Yet, I can’t find it.  So does that mean that spring hasn’t arrived yet?  Starting from last week, I’m finally starting to feel like spring is here at least from the weather perspective in my area.  I’m tired of all that warm one day, cold the next BS.  I have difficulty figuring out what to wear in the morning and trying to factor in the day’s bipolar weather requires too much brain power.  Just saying.  Here’s some recent releases that remind me of that loverly springtime.

Primary is a hip hop producer and musician that has worked with some big names like Garion, Supreme Team and Dynamic Duo.  Slowly, since last year he’s been coming out with his own stuff and asking his connections to feature on his tracks.  So all the songs on the 1st CD of “Primary And The Messengers LP” have been released before.  The 2nd CD seems like they are new releases.  I honestly didn’t know who he was and so it took me awhile to commit to downloading it but once I did I couldn’t stop listening to the entire album over and over again.  *Be forewarned, this is gonna be a long post.
