Just Bananas About: Week of 7/3/17

Music is such a powerful medium.  And so, when I saw that Yoo Hee Yeol was doing another music program on JTBC, it made me wonder if this was meant to be the program that followed Sugar Man which ended last year.  Despite not having Yoo Jae Suk beside him, the fact that Yoon Do Hyun and Lee Sora would be joining intrigued me in and of itself.  Begin Again takes its name from the music film starring Kiera Knightley, Mark Ruffalo and Adam Levine but takes these established musicians to the streets in foreign countries where they’ll have to sing in front of audiences that may not be familiar with who they are.

It didn’t seem out of character to me that Yoo Hee Yeol and Yoon Do Hyun would agree to do the program but it was highly surprising that Lee Sora agreed to do it.  After all, she’s been pretty much of a recluse for the last 6 years and hasn’t released anything new since then.

Having said that, the three musicians, with their differing styles, got together to practice and go on this adventure.  Noh Hong Chul will act as their road manager and I’d imagine that he will also provide amusing commentary.  The first destination for the group is Dublin, Ireland.  Immediately, the group can’t help but think of Once as Glen Hansard’s character in the film was that of a struggling musician, busking in the streets.

Just Bananas About: Week of 5/1/17

With the start of May, it’s also the start of family month in Korea.  With holidays such as Children’s Day (5/5) and Parent’s Day (5/8), May seems to be that time of year when families spend more quality time together.  However on Ugly Duckling, that may not be the case for these man-children.  Yoo Hee Yeol joins Shin Dong Yup and Seo Jang Hoon as the guest MC on the most recent episode.

Just Bananas About: Week of 6/6/16

The challenging thing about doing a show like Sugar Man is finding the artists and bringing them onto the show.  There have been a number of groups that fans have been interested in seeing but for one reason or another, they haven’t made an appearance yet.  Last week, the show changed up its typical format.  Instead of remaking old songs, they brought not 2 but 4 groups on the show and had idol members fill in for the original members of the group that could not be there.

Jive Monkey Playlist: 12/8/14

I don’t know what it is about the end of the year and the holidays that makes us reflect but the latest releases by Toy (aka Yoo Hee Yeol) and Shin Hye Sung seem to do just that.  These guys have been in the business a long time but haven’t released their own solo albums in some time due to being busy with other projects.

Just Bananas About: Week of 8/8/14

Youth Over Flowers totally sneaked up on me. The show premiered last week and I think when I first saw the promos for this show I was in the undecided camp. Sure, it funny in the way that we’ve come to expect for the “Flowers” series but while I enjoyed the last season of Grandpas Over Flowers, it didn’t have that same zing as the Grandpas’ first season.

Will Youth Over Flowers live up to the hype? Yes, yes, it does. Oh, how conniving you are Na PD and it makes me love you all the more.

Jive Monkey Playlist: 11/8/13

I’ve had old school K-Pop on my mind lately, if you couldn’t tell.  Probably because of Answer Me1994.  However, even new songs today have been looking at their era for inspiration.
